The Best of Me Movie Review
Nicholas Sparks has done it again! This man could draw tears from the driest of eyes with his ability to portray the emotion of love like no other. Not just love in all its splendor, but the pain caused by love that is severed through circumstances beyond the character’s control. When you truly love someone that love remains through time, distance and even death.
Great writing is the key to a great story. However, when you put those words onto the big screen, you need actors who can convey that story convincingly. The cast did a spectacular job of doing this. You can feel every emotion that the character is feeling, you can relate to them and that is what makes a movie worth watching!
This book made movie is about a young man, Dawson Cole, who escapes his home where love never existed. He was abused his whole life by his father, Tommy Cole, and brothers who lived a life of crime. On the day he met Amanda, his father began to hit him for not doing his bidding and so he left. He hid out in the garage of a man named Tuck who would later become the father he always wanted and mutual friend to Amanda. That does not end the confrontations with his family who wishes to control him.
The tale is told in the present with memories of the past to see their story unravel. You get to see them meet, fall in love and experience love at its best and worst. Dawson is involved in a terrible accident that should have taken his life. However, he was spared and this causes him to question his purpose in this life. Meanwhile, Amanda is speaking with her son on the front porch. She got married and has children; she lost her little girl to leukemia when she was just a few years old. She worked through it but her husband never did which caused a huge rift between them.
Both Amanda and Dawson receive a call informing them of a mutual friend’s death and so they return, unbeknownst to the other, to their hometown to execute the final wishes of their friend. When they see each other again, you can see the discomfort and pain that time had not diminished. You can still sense that there is unfinished business left to attend for two people who were once so very much in love.
Tragedy strikes; people are hurt and Dawson tries to do the right thing by pushing Amanda away. He is imprisoned when someone is killed accidentally when he allows his anger to override his thinking. He does not want Amanda to wait for him. She still tries to come and see him but he takes that decision away from her. Nevertheless, neither time nor distance has kept these two from loving each other.
I do not wish to spoil all the surprises for you, so I will stop here. If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks, you will definitely want to add this to your collection. If you are not, then I still suggest you check it out, you will not be disappointed.
